The valley letter

V is a valley — two slopes meeting in one sharp point, the letter version of the letter U with its curve sharpened to an edge. The sound is vvv: top teeth on bottom lip, voice buzzing behind it. That buzz is the entire lesson: v is f's loud twin, exactly the pairing p and b have one row up the alphabet. Hold fingers on the throat, say fff (silent), then vvv (buzz), and the letter explains itself in ten seconds.

Van, violin and volcano front-load the buzz, and volcano is the heavyweight draw of the page — an erupting volcano in the draw box, red at the top and brown below, is one of the most dramatic regulars in the whole matrix. V itself is a rarer starting letter (the vocabulary picks thin out fast after violin), which makes the draw box carry more of this page than usual. Let it; a volcano is doing more teaching per square inch than any second word row would.

Teaching tips

F and F's loud twin

Teeth on lip for both: fff is breath only, vvv adds the throat buzz. Fingers on the throat, alternate the two. V is the clearest voiced-unvoiced pair in the alphabet and this demo is its best ten seconds.

Trace the valley

Walk two fingers down one slope and up the other before coloring — down, point, up. The finger path is the pre-writing rehearsal, and V's single point makes the direction change impossible to miss.

Volcano countdown

Draw the volcano in the draw box and count down from five, then erupt with a long vvvvv. Countdown-plus-eruption is the repeatable game this page generates, and every repeat is another v rep.

Frequently asked questions

What V words are on this coloring page?

Van, violin and volcano. Vacuum and vegetables are the frequent extensions, and vase appears whenever someone's household has fresh flowers. V is a thin letter for vocabulary — the volcano carries this page, and everyone knows it.

What sound does V make?

A buzz with teeth on lip: vvv — the voiced twin of f. Say both with fingers on your throat and feel the switch from silent to buzzing. That pairing (f/v) is the same structure as p/b and t/d, one row apart.

What age is this letter V coloring page for?

Three to six. The two-slope shape colors easily for toddlers, and the volcano draw gives the page its drama for the older end — eruptions are the most-repeated draw-box performance on the site.

Is V the same shape as U?

Same skeleton, sharpened corners: V is the valley, U the smooth cup. Children who color both pages usually invent the memory rule themselves — "v is pointy, u is round" — and self-invented rules are the durable kind.
