The kicking letter

K makes the same sound as hard c — a clean back-of-the-mouth click — which makes this page the perfect follow-up to the letter C page. Tell a child that k and c are twins who look nothing alike; then color both. Kite, king and key all front-load the click, and kite earns the featured spot because it literally starts with a kick of wind.

The shape is a spine with two diagonal kicks: the capital a tall spine with an arm and a leg, the lowercase the same at half height. Diagonals are harder for young hands to color inside than verticals and circles — the corners pinch the crayon — so expect this page to take a little longer and look a little more abstract. That difficulty is the point: diagonals need practice, and few letters offer two of them this prominently.

Teaching tips

Kick while you color

The k sound is a kick — air released in one click. Do an actual little kick with each k-word: kite, kick, king. Sound-plus-motion pairing again; it works for nearly every consonant and especially for k.

Twin check with C

After coloring, hold this page next to the letter C page and listen: kite and cat start identically. Explain that c and k are sound twins with different outfits. It sets up the later spelling rule (cat vs kitten) without teaching it yet.

Kite tail in the box

Draw a kite in the draw box with the longest tail the paper allows. Kites are the highest-yield drawing in the k category — every child can draw one, and the bow pattern colors beautifully.

Frequently asked questions

What K words are on this coloring page?

Kite, king and key. Koala and kangaroo are the box-drawing favorites — Australia supplies half the k-animal kingdom — and kettle appears whenever someone's household still boils one.

Do C and K make the same sound?

Yes — the hard c of cat and the k of kite are identical clicks. English spells the sound both ways (and ck locks it in kitten), which is why meeting the sound twice across two coloring pages is genuinely useful preparation for spelling later.

What age is this letter K coloring page for?

Four to six, mostly — the double diagonal makes K a slightly later coloring page than circles-and-sticks letters. Confident toddler colorers will still manage the capital's big shapes with a chunky crayon.

Why does the letter K start some words silently, like knife?

Historical spelling: the k was once pronounced, and English kept the letter after the sound went quiet. Knife, knee and know are the famous silent-k club. For a preschooler this does not matter yet — this page teaches only the sounded k.
