The letter that starts everything

A is where the alphabet starts, and it is also where the two trickiest sounds live: the short a of apple and the long a of acorn both open this page. The capital A is two slanted legs and a crossbar — three straight strokes a young child can outline in three different colors. The lowercase a is a circle with a wall on the right, which makes it a perfect first shape to color: round things are forgiving, and a wobbly circle still reads as an a.

Coloring a letter before writing it is quietly good pedagogy. The crayon traces the same path a pencil will later, at whatever speed the hand can manage, and the child owns the shape before anyone asks them to reproduce it at small size. The word row gives the sound a job — apple, ant, acorn are all things a child can picture, which is what turns a shape into a letter.

Teaching tips

Two colors, two sounds

Color the capital A in one color while you say "apple," the lowercase in another while you say "acorn." The page deliberately carries both sounds — this is the easiest place a child will ever meet long and short a side by side.

Rainbow the crossbar

Challenge an older preschooler to fill the crossbar with every red crayon in the box, darkest to lightest. Sorting shades is real color-vocabulary work hiding inside letter practice.

Apple prints for the box

Halve an apple, dip it in paint, and stamp the draw-your-own box before drawing stems and leaves on top. The page becomes an art project and the A sound gets repeated six more times without a single flashcard.

Frequently asked questions

What things that start with A can my child color on this page?

The word row has apple, ant, and acorn, and the letters themselves are the main coloring surface. Beyond the page: alligator, astronaut, and apron all extend the same sound if your child wants more to color after printing.

What sound does the letter A make?

Two of them, and this page shows both: the short a as in apple and ant, and the long a as in acorn, where the letter says its own name. Say each word slowly when your child starts coloring it — the sound lands better mid-activity than in a drill.

What age is this letter A coloring page for?

Ages three to six. Threes and fours mostly color the big shapes and ignore the trace row; fives and sixes use the whole page, then move on to writing the letter freehand on the draw box border — which is exactly the progression preschool and kindergarten teachers run.

How do I print the letter A coloring page?

Hit the print button — the page strips itself down to its two print pages: the picture gallery first, the bubble-letter practice sheet second, portrait, black outlines on white. The Download PNG button saves the picture page as an image if you would rather print from a photo app or load it onto a tablet for a drawing app.
