The smallest letter, the biggest vowel
Lowercase i is the smallest letter your child will color — one short stroke and a floating dot — and it is secretly one of the most important. I is a vowel, the "in-between" sound: ih, as in igloo, ink and insect, the three words on this page. Short i is acoustically tangled with short e (children mix pen and pin for years), so every extra colorful pass over the ih sound helps untangle it early.
The dot deserves its own attention. Children love the dot because it is the one piece of the alphabet that is purely decorative-looking — a period floating above a line. Explain it as the letter's hat: i wears it, and later j will too. The capital I, meanwhile, is three straight strokes, the same rectangle-build as the number one with a cap and base, and colors fast even for two-year-olds.
Teaching tips
Dot gets a special color
Color the whole lowercase i one color, then the dot in gold, silver, or glitter crayon — whatever feels like treasure. Making the dot ceremonious is why children rarely forget it later when handwriting starts.
Pin vs pen rehearsal
Short i and short e are the classic mix-up. After coloring, say pin and pen back to back, exaggerating the difference. The page's ih words — igloo, ink, insect — are the anchors to return to.
Inchworm the box
Draw an inchworm in the draw box — a line of little humps — and measure it with a ruler afterward. I is for inch, and the measuring turns the drawing into a sneaky math moment.
Frequently asked questions
What I words are on this coloring page?
Igloo, ink and insect — all short-i words with the ih sound at the front. Ice cream is the word every child requests next, but it runs the long i (eye sound), so it belongs to a later conversation.
Why does lowercase i have a dot?
Historically, to mark it as separate from the strokes around it in medieval handwriting — practically, for us: it is i's hat, and children remember it as one. The dot matters in writing because without it i becomes just another vertical line.
What sound does I make on this page?
The short i — ih as in igloo, ink and insect. The long i (saying the letter's own name, as in ice and kite) comes later in reading instruction; this page plants the short sound first because it is the one simple readers need most.
What age is this letter I coloring page for?
Three to six. The capital colors in seconds for toddlers; the lowercase dot gives preschoolers their favorite detail on the page, and kindergartners take the trace row seriously as handwriting warm-up.
