The letter with the hook
J is i grown up and gone somewhere: same stem, same dot on the lowercase, but the stem ends in a hook that dives below the line. That hook is the only structural difference between i and j on the lowercase side, and coloring the two pages in the same week — i's short stem, then j's diving stem — teaches the contrast better than any side-by-side worksheet. The capital J has the hook too, sweeping under itself with more room than any other capital gets.
The sound is a quick voiced tap — jaw, jaw, jaw. Juice, jet and jelly front-load it, and juice is the word children ask for by name, which is a real factor: enthusiasm gets a letter remembered. Juice and jelly together also set up the longest-running kindergarten debate, whether jelly and jam are different foods, which your child will be delighted to explain to anyone who stands still.
Teaching tips
Jump the j
J is for jump: color the letter, then jump while saying j-words — jump, juice, jelly. The j sound and the jumping motion both start with that same quick release, and gross-motor pairing is how active learners keep letters.
Color the hook last
Color the straight part of the lowercase j first, then the diving hook in a second color, then the dot in a third. Three colors, three parts — the anatomy lesson happens without a single word of instruction.
Jaguar in the box
The draw box usually gets a jaguar or a jet. If jaguars are hard to draw, suggest a jigsaw-puzzle pattern: jagged random shapes colored differently, which is literally a jigsaw and counts as a j-word.
Frequently asked questions
What J words can my child color?
Juice, jet and jelly in the bubble row. Jacket, jaguar and jam are the favorite box-drawing extensions — and jellyfish, which is technically two j-words in one animal and highly popular for that reason.
How is j different from i?
The hook. Lowercase i is a short stem with a dot; lowercase j is that same stem-plus-dot with a hook that dives below the line. Coloring both pages in one week makes the contrast visible — same stem, j just keeps going down.
What age is this letter J coloring page for?
Three to six. The capital's big sweeping hook is satisfying for toddlers to outline, and kindergartners enjoy the i-versus-j comparison once someone points out the family resemblance.
Does the trace row work for left-handed kids?
Yes — hollow outlines trace the same either-handed, and the sheet has no orientation-dependent content. Left-handed colorers tend to trace right-to-left; the row is built to survive both directions.
