The corner letter

L is one straight line with one foot — the simplest possible letter construction after I. That makes this the highest-success page for youngest colorers: even a two-year-old can stay roughly inside a capital L, and the success matters, because coloring pages are as much about wanting to come back tomorrow as they are about letters. The lowercase l is just the taller stick — no foot — which makes l one of the easiest lowercase letters to recognize at a glance.

The sound is the lightest liquid in the mouth: tongue tip up behind the teeth, voice on, la. Lion, leaf and lamp carry it, and lion is the strongest draw on the page — everything with a mane gets colored twice. L also happens to open love and like, which gives parents an unusual amount of personal use out of this particular letter.

Teaching tips

Lick the lollipop

The classic l trick: the tongue tap in la is the same motion as licking a lollipop. Pretend-lick while saying l-words. The physical cue is why lollipop appears in every letter-l lesson ever taught.

Trace the corner

Walk two fingers along the capital L — down the spine, out the foot — before coloring. The finger-trace is the pre-writing rehearsal, and L's single corner makes it the best letter to learn the move on.

Leaf rubbings

Leaf is on the sheet, so take the page outside: hold paper over a leaf and rub with the flat side of a peeled crayon. The rubbing fills the draw box with a real leaf print — craft and letter practice in one.

Frequently asked questions

What L words are on the page?

Lion, leaf and lamp in the bubble row. Ladybug, lemon and love are the usual draw-box tenants — love especially, which is why this page gets printed for cards more than any other letter.

Why is L a good first coloring letter?

Shape simplicity: one vertical, one horizontal, one corner. Very young children get a clean win on this page, and an early win is what makes the next page welcome. Start toddlers on L or I before handing them a K or an R.

What sound does L make?

The liquid l — tongue tip up behind the top teeth with the voice on: la. It stays light and bright at the start of lion, leaf and lamp. (The darker l at the ends of words like ball comes years later, if ever explicitly.)

How is lowercase l different from capital I?

Almost identical shape, different height — which is exactly why this page and the letter I page make a good pair to color in one sitting. In print handwriting, lowercase l is simply the tall version of i without the dot.
